Eddie Aikau Print
Edward Ryan Makuahanai Aikau (Eddie Aikau)
O'ahu, HI
A Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer. He saved over 500 people, being the first lifeguard on the North Shore (Waimea Bay), O'ahu. He believed everyone should enjoy the ocean safely.
In 1978, the Polynesian Voyaging Society was seeking volunteers for a 30-day, 2,500-mile (4,000 km) journey to re-enact the ancient route of the Polynesian migration between the Hawaiian and Tahitian island chains. Aikau joined the voyage as a crew member. The boat sank due to a leak, which Eddie tried to find help paddling out on his surfboard. The crew was saved, but Eddie disappeared at sea. In honor of his memory the surf community of O'ahu hosts the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational "The Eddie", an annual surf competition where surfers from all over the world ride the waves he once did.
